Despite being an oil-rich country Iraq's main oil refinery at Baiji is now the hands of ISIS insurgents cutting much of the fuel to the rest of the country. Petrol rationing has come in to force across northern Iraq with huge queues that mean many drivers wait in line for hours, sometimes overnight, just to receive their allowance of 30 litres. The shortage has also seen a huge increase in fuel prices with a litre of petrol rising 150% from 500 Iraqi Dinars to 1500 Iraqi Dinars. Photo credit: Matt Cetti-Roberts/LNP

This Sanisbury's filling station in Salford, normally busy on a Sunday afternoon, sold out of both unleaded and diesel fuel and had to place printed signs at the entrance of its forecourt to deter motorists from queuing. This despite an announcement by the union, Unite, that there is no immediate plan for a fuel strike and updated advice from the government stating there is no urgent need for motorists to top up their fuel tanks.
