The historic Steam Tug, Portwey making her final journey this autumn on the River Thames, passing Wapping during sunny weather this morning. Steam Tug Portwey is returning to her mooring in West India Dock, where she will remain during the winter months to have her engine stripped down and maintenance work carried out. The fireboat was built in the 1930s and played a role in the war, helping to evactuate soldiers from Dunkirk and also dealing with fires from the river during the Blitz. The restoration of Massey Shaw was carried out in Gloucester after a lottery award in 2008. She is the oldest operating fireboat in Europe and is listed in the National Historic Fleet. The fireboat was built in the 1930s and played a role in the war, helping to evactuate soldiers from Dunkirk and also dealing with fires from the river during the Blitz. The restoration of Massey Shaw was carried out in Gloucester after a lottery award in 2008. She is the oldest operating fireboat in Europe and is listed in the National Historic Fleet.
