At dusk every night in the autumn and winter, tens of thousands of the birds gather to roost together safely overnight on the latticework of cast iron legs underneath the Victorian  seaside pier . While plentiful in Aberystwyth , starling numbers have declined by over 66% since the 1970’s and the birds are on the RSPB’s  at-risk ‘red list’  for highest conservation priority, with the species needing urgent action.
