  • © Licensed to London News Pictures. 21/06/2019. Bristol, UK. BBC Licence Fee Protest, at the BBC Bristol offices on Whiteladies Road, to save the universal over 75s' free TV licence in the UK. The BBC has decided to introduce a means-test for licence fee payers where those who claim pensions’ credit will be exempt from the TV licence charges, but 3.7 million pensioners will have to pay the annual licence fee of £154.50 from next year. In 2015, the Government passed responsibility for the free TV licence for the over-75s to the BBC, and said they would cease to fund the free licence from 2020. Protests across the UK have been called by the National Pensioners Convention who are fighting the proposal to end the current arrangement, and are asking for responsibility for what they say is a vital welfare benefit for over-75s to be taken back under government control.
