  • © Licensed to London News Pictures . 09/07/2013 . Manchester , UK . A fireman douses the bridge's frame in the heat . The Barton Road Swing Bridge which links Redclyffe Road and Barton Road over the Manchester Ship Canal , was stuck open today after heat caused the metal frame to expand whilst it was opened to allow a boat to pass beneath . A fire crew doused the metal structure with water to cool it down until it contracted sufficiently to allow the bridge to swing closed . Rush hour traffic backed up for several miles around the Trafford Centre and M60 as a consequence of the road's one-and-a-half hour closure .
