  • © Licensed to London News Pictures. 29/07/2019; Bristol, UK. The central bay of the Brabazon hanger at Filton Airfield. Malaysian company YTL Developments are proposing to build a new 16,000 seater 'Bristol Arena' for concerts and events in the Brabazon hangers, and Filton Airfield is to be redeveloped for housing by YTL. The new Brabazon neighbourhood will eventually have thousands of new homes, schools, health centre, university campus and employment space. After the Second World War, the concrete runway at Filton Aerodrome was extended to enable the huge Bristol Brabazon airliner to take off safely. The three-bay Brabazon Hangar was built in the late 1940s and the hangar doors were the largest in the world at the time. After a worker was crushed and killed while taking a sleep in one of the folds of the hangar doors, a siren was installed to warn employees when the doors were being operated. Press preview event for the 41st Bristol International Balloon Fiesta 2019 which will take place from 08 - 11 August 2019. For the preview up to 25 hot air balloons will take off from Filton Airfield (soon to be developed for housing), next to the Brabazon Hangar which is the site of a proposed new YTL Arena, and Aerospace Bristol to play homage to the 50th anniversary of Concorde. The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors and this year the Fiesta will be celebrating Icons of Bristol and look to highlight some of the things that make up the home of the International Balloon Fiesta. The event has joined forces with Aerospace Bristol to honour one of the city’s most famed creations, Concorde and Aardman Animations who are celebrating the 30th anniversary of Wallace and Gromit. Over the course of four days, the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta will play host to more than 100 colourful hot air balloons of all sizes and shapes. Special shapes are an iconic part of the Fiesta and the event kicks off with its now traditional special shapes launch on Thursday evening of 08 August. Photo credit: Simon Chapman/LNP.
