In Peraliya, a train was derailed by a 20m high tsunami wave with the loss of 1500 lives. Although many of the carriages have been destroyed, engine '591', also known as 'Queen of the Sea' was completely restored and on every 'tsunami day' the train runs the original route from Colombo to her original resting place that is now a permanent memorial. Naveen Singh Chauhan was woken from his sleep at 2am on the night of the 16th June by heavy rain that began to fall on his village of Karadhi in Uttarkashi district. Gathering what they could they left immediately and in less than 48hrs the foundations of their house had all but completely fallen away.
