Nora Newby, 80, from Chilton has been one of the first people to stand on the route of Durham Miners Gala. This year is her 59th year of coming to the Durham Miners Gala as she waits patiently for the colliery brass bands to pass by.

The Gala, or Durham Big Meet as it is known locally began in 1871 and today many hundreds of people still meet up in the market place of the city which is the start of the parade.

The colliery brass bands and banners are followed by those with allegiance to those former colliery villages and they march from there to the cities Racecourse. As they pass the County Hotel on Old Elvet they walk past union leaders, invited guests and local dignitaries who greet the march from the hotel balcony.
