Elephant Eden is the largest purpose-built elephant habitat in northern Europe. A female African elephant called Buta aged 29 was transported to the new 20 acre (80,000 m2) habitat from Knowsley Safari after 4-months of special training. Former MP Ann Widdecombe welcomed Buta to Elephant Eden. Buta will be followed shortly by Nissim, a 19 year old bull from the same herd at Knowsley Safari who will join her again at Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm. The ‘Elephant Eden’ project was officially launched to the public with the help of the zoo's supporter Ann Widdecombe in September 2011. Construction work began in September 2012 after a year of planning and fundraising. Noah's Ark Zoo Farm is owned and run by Anthony Bush, and has been criticised for promoting the theory of creationism, as opposed to evolution.
